The surface transportation board provided a draft environmental impact statement and has granted RJ Corman permission to reactivate the railroad that is now presently SSRT. It is not a "done" deal yet but this is a serious step in losing the better part of SSRT's trail system. The reactivation of this line would remove from SSRT from Black Bear Trailhead to Gorton which will also eliminate the Peale Tunnel and Viaduct.

The public has a chance to comment on this proposal. We need to step up and stop this from happening. Its bad enough to lose this section of the railroad bed, but in Gorton a massive dump is planned (and is why RJ Corman wants to reactivate the railroad line) The attached PDF is the draft. Hopefully at the BBQ this Saturday we can find out more about this and how to stop it (such as a petition or whatever)

The PDF says 20 miles are to be reactivated. SSRT's section is about 8 miles. (From Mile Point 63 to MP 55 based on the original NYC mile posts) This would start at the Gorton Crossing with the multi-use dirt road. I attached a second file showing the proposed map of the railroad.
